Fighting for workers: Happy Labor day!
Since Tim Denson began organizing, back in 2011, Tim has been fighting for Workers. Fighting for better wages, better work environments, and for their right to unionize and organize.
When Tim ran for Mayor in 2014, “Living Wages for all County Workers” was a leading platform plank. After Tim lost that campaign, he began organizing with Athens for Everyone and the Economic Justice Coaltion to still make it a reality. After months of advocacy and pressuring the Mayor & Commission, the people and workers won living wages for all full-time ACC workers in April of 2017!
Tim then worked for years as a labor organizer with the United Campus Workers of Georgia (CWA 3265). Assisting members successfully fight for better compensation for Graduate Workers, leading membership drives across the University of Georgia campus, and supporting members in grievance processes and lobbying efforts at the State Capitol. Tim still proudly pays his union dues and carries his UCWGA card!
On the Athens-Clarke County Commission, Tim and his progressive colleagues successfully raised the pay of ALL County workers to over $15/hour in 2022. Tim also supported ACC library workers to get additional pay raises, Classic Center Arena employees to be paid living wages, and was a staunch ally on the Commission for the ACC Firefighters who became only the second officially recognized Firefighters Union in the state of Georgia!
As a School Board Member with Clarke County Schools, Tim Denson has been consistent and has helped create some of the largest pay raises in the history of CCSD for both classified and certified workers!
It is Tim’s track history and staunch support for unions that earned Tim an endorsement by the Georgia AFL-CIO when he ran for Commission. Happy Labor Day Athens and thank you workers for making the world go round!
